Vilamoura is located in the Algarve and is a sophisticated, modern, and lively resort, popular for its wide range of leisure activities. The Marina of Vilamoura, which began in 1971 with excavations in the former Quinta do Morgado in Quarteira, received its first sailing boat in 1974.

Where is Vilamoura?

Vilamoura belongs to the municipality of Loulé. It is located approximately in the middle of the Algarve coast, about 26 km or thirty minutes by car from Faro airport.

​Vilamoura has average temperatures between 8ºC and 32ºC all year round.

The Summer months are hot, with temperatures reaching 35ºC and sometimes higher, but tempered by the coastal breeze, which makes them more bearable.

You can expect around twelve hours of sunshine per day, with virtually no rain.

Autumn and Spring in Vilamoura are mild, with temperatures ranging from 14ºC to 30ºC. Tourists from all over the world come to Vilamoura to play golf during this time.

The Winter months are the coldest, with temperatures between 8ºC and 15ºC. It is the ideal time to observe the natural beauty of the almond blossom and to spend a wonderful holiday in Vilamoura!

 

Distance between Vilamoura and Quarteira

​Vilamoura and Quarteira have almost merged today, so it is quite normal for tourists to visit the Quarteira fish market from Vilamoura and stroll along the beautiful promenade, which is right on the beach and in the commercial area.

A trip from Vilamoura to the center of Quarteira takes about thirty minutes on foot or eight minutes by car.

You can also get to Quarteira by a minibus that runs all year round between the two villages. The bus stops at the bus stop next to the Vilamoura marina and takes you to one of the many stops in Quarteira at a reasonable price.

Vilamoura Marina

As the largest marina in Portugal, Vilamoura Marina is a national and international reference in the recreational boating sector, with more than 800 berths, a sailing school, and a fully equipped shipyard.

It is the first marina in Portugal to receive the 5 Gold Anchor Platinum accreditation, considered the highest award in the industry. In 2020, it was voted Best Portuguese Marina for the tenth consecutive year by Publituris Portugal Trade Awards. Received the international title of Marine of Distinction for being named Best International Marina by the Yacht Harbour Association in the 2015-2017 triennium and also voted Best International Marina by TYHA in 2019, 2020 and 2021

In addition to the various nautical activities offered at the marina, Vilamoura also offers other activities such as golf, tennis, horse riding, a large and varied shopping area, nightlife, and two fantastic beaches to cool off on hot days.

Beaches in Vilamoura

An extensive golden sandy beach, about three kilometers long, divided by the harbor bar, forms the two existing beaches in Vilamoura: Vilamoura Beach and Falésia Beach.

Both are equipped with all the necessary services to offer you full comforts, such as sunbeds, restaurants, prepared structures for guests with reduced mobility, WC, showers, lifeguards, and parking close to the beach access.

 

Vilamoura Beach

Vilamoura beach is located on the east side of the harbor bar.

With its fine, golden sand that extends to the Quarteira dock, this beach has a blue sea with first-class water quality, which is why it is constantly awarded the Blue Flag.

 

 

Falésia Beach

The beach of Falésia stretches from the Vilamoura marina to the Rocha Baixinha beach in Albufeira and is characterized by a long sandy beach of fine golden sand flanked by imposing orange cliffs crowned by an extensive pine forest that protects the beach from the harsh winds from the northern quadrant.

With its incomparable beauty and a climate that allows it, this beach is ideal for swimming during the warmer months of the year and for sightseeing during the rest of the year.

 

What to do in Vilamoura?

Apart from spending the day relaxing on the beach and cooling off on warmer days, there are several ideal activities for fun and/or relaxation that you can do on your holiday in Vilamoura:

  • Cerro da Vila Roman Ruins: A Roman villa built by the Romans during the 3rd century, where several economic activities were developed, namely the production of Garum (fish preserves) exported to the entire Roman Empire. Later it was also occupied by the Visigoths and the Moors.
  • Aquashow: Water amusement park with mind-blowing slides, water roller coaster, wave pool, children's area, and more. In other words, a guaranteed day of fun.
  • Zoomarine: This theme park, which focuses on marine life, is also one of Portugal's main study and research centers for the protection, education, and rehabilitation of animals.
